Named after one of the Spanish exploration ships, San Carlos is a well-established community in eastern San Diego County. Communities adjacent to San Carlos include Allied Gardens and Del Cerro to the west, El Cajon to the east, and La Mesa to the south. The Mission Trails Regional Park borders San Carlos to the north. Downtown San Diego is just a short 15 miles to the west of San Carlos. San Carlos falls within the 92119 Zip code and has a population of about 27,000 residents.

The community offers many attractions for residents and visitors alike. Lake Murray Reservoir, located in the neighborhood, offers a variety of outdoor activities. The lake itself is popular for boating, fishing and float tubing. The lake offers great fishing during the fishing season when it is well stocked with bass, trout and bluegill. The park surrounding the lake has a 3-mile long paved trail that is ideally suited for running, walking, jogging, biking and rollerblading. The region has plenty of picnic and barbecue areas. The community also has an excellent golf course, which borders Lake Murray.

San Carlos residents are actively involved in their community and form a well-knit society. Locals are especially proud of the various attractions this town offers. Whether it’s fishing at Lake Murray or climbing to the top of nearby Cowles Mountain, which offers spectacular views of San Diego, Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, there is plenty to do in San Carlos. The Mission Trails Regional Park spanning a whopping 5,800 acres presents 40 miles of trails for hiking, biking and equestrian activities for outdoor adventurers.

Schools in San Carlos are operated by the San Diego City Unified School District. The community is home to Patrick Henry High School, which is a comprehensive digital high school and recipient of the California Distinguished School award. The school has also been listed twice by Newsweek Magazine as being among the top 1% of America’s high schools.
