Incorporated in 1986, Encinitas is a pleasant coastal community located in Northern San Diego County. Two lagoons border the city – the Batiquitos Lagoon to the north and San Elijo Lagoon to the south. Communities adjacent to Encinitas include Leucadia to the north, Cardiff-by-the-Sea to the south, and Olivenhain to the east. The Pacific Ocean borders the community on its western coast.

Encinitas is a land of beautiful beaches, splendid cliffs, mesas and rolling mountains. There are over 59,000 inhabitants residing in about 23,500 housing units in this magnificent seaside community. The residents of Encinitas enjoy a very pleasant climate. The average year round temperature is 72 degrees with the mercury rarely exceeding 85 degrees or dipping below 40 degrees.

One of North County’s favorite beach communities, Encinitas is known for its beautiful beaches, which span six miles of the Pacific Ocean coastline. There are no less than 11 beaches in this community, the most famous being Swami’s Beach, which is a surfer’s paradise.

The beaches in Encinitas are considered more secluded and less crowded than many other beach areas in San Diego. Residents and visitors alike also enjoy the wide variety of beach activities such as surfing, scuba diving and sun bathing.

Once known as the "Flower Capital of the World," with its many flower farms and nurseries, Encinitas continues to have a thriving flower industry. The community is uniquely famous for growing ornamental flowers, especially poinsettias. Encinitas also has plenty of shops offering a variety of merchandise. In particular, there are many exquisite antique stores that line both sides of historic Highway 101.

The community of Encinitas is mostly residential and includes Old Encinitas and New Encinitas. New Encinitas is a recently developed neighborhood with real estate and newer homes for sale that include large tract homes and condominiums. Old Encinitas, with its historic charm, has a unique small-town feel and is characterized by neighborhoods with wide streets and sidewalks.
