San Diego State University was established in 1897 and was originally called the Normal School, since it was located in the area now known as Normal Heights. The school was renamed as San Diego State College in 1935, and moved to the area now known as College Grove. Although the college attained the status of a university by the 1970s, the term ‘College’ became permanently associated with the community’s name.
